Inez and Vinoodh in their home in Soho.
The Dutch photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin are the duo known for their independent art exhibitions, editorial shootings and covers, as well as advertising campaigns. Working together in Amsterdam since 1986, they are currently living in New York with their son. For this fall the couple have not only launched their greatest work in a book, Pretty Much Everyhing, but also a jewelry line in collaboration with Ten Thousand Things. We met up with Inez Van Lamsweerde for an exclusive High Five! feature.
What is the thought behind the jewelry collection?
It started with my husband Vinoodh making me a necklace because our son was turning ten. He asked the guys behind Ten Thousands Things if they could make a necklace based on our two wedding rings intertwined, with a little star in the end because our son is called Charles Star, as a commoration of his 10th birthday. I started wearing it and everyone asked me where I got it from. Since our son turned ten we started with ten necklaces with different stones. We also thought about the interlocking of the (wedding) rings, as it could be both rings, earrings and bangles.
Which one is your favorite piece in the collection?
Right now it’s this piece I am wearing (note: a diamond necklace with two rings and a star pendant).
What is the first thing you do in the morning?
If you want an honest answer I wake up in the morning and check my Instagram immediately. I love waking up and looking through everyones pictures. My favorite Instagram account is this guy, who I don’t know though, but he’s a photographer. His Instagram is Arnold Daniel and I love his photographs. The guy has an amazing eye and he mostly takes pictures of people in the subway.
What is your detox/retox?
I do my detox with the guys behind Burn & Build Body. I do the shakes that they make as a two week detox to start. Generally I do my breakfast with their shakes as well. They are so good, almost like desserts and they covers all cravings. That is when I am clean. My ultimate retox, or trash, is Lay’s Barbecue chips and Coca Cola. That is the dream meal technically.
What do you collect and why?
It would be pottery, if you could call it collecting. It would be the one thing for me that is the most present and most of it is Japanese pottery. I think it’s because I am obsessed with flowers and making still life of flowers. The pottery goes very well with that and adds to the atmosphere to what happens with the flowers. For me it is as close as I can get to painting since I am obsessed with the colors and the shapes. The pottery is a part of that and if I see something, I can not NOT buy it.
Which tune gets you in the perfect photo shoot mode?
It depends a little bit on the shoot, but Michael Jackson will always do the work.
